“The sounds of winter”

A robin regularly seen near the same corner of the Sihl, behind the Zurich Landesmuseum, and surrounded by the crisp, dry leaves of cold early winter days. The same leaves you have crunched under your footsteps. Can you hear those sounds too?

The sounds of winter combines these two common sightings of the season. This particular image will always remain special to me. It was sketched live on instagram for the final official challenge of the #momentsketchers community in December 2020.

The combination of great washi and delicate brush pen lines delivered some pretty extraordinary results. Just look at those legs on the robin, needle-thin yet full of gradation. Or the fluffed up belly feathers, an illusion created by one very soft wash stroke. And the small, curious eye. All of which are fully visible in this reproduction. I have yet to paint another robin, for I am not quite sure how I can improve on this little marvel. But I do find it the perfect companion for the winter holiday season.

Fine art pigment print on handmade washi with fine deckled edges. Postcard size approximately 15 cm width x 10 cm height. Personally signed by the artist on the reverse side of the print.
