Summer cotton grass are one of the elements of the summer landscape with cranes submitted for the 2021 international ink painting exhibition in Tokyo. On a break between sections of the exhibition piece, I painted this moonlit scene of a single boat by the marshland shore. There is no white color used on this piece, only black ink and ink wash. The cotton grass is painted in the ink painting negative space technique – shironuki. This piece was one of the first I painted on Awagami handmade art card paper. I love everything about this washi – its deckled edges, natural color and soft haptic. I will return to it again very soon, I suspect.
