The fresh larch cone still attached to a small twig. Lying on the ground, on a soft carpet of needles in tones of lush dark to milk chocolate brown and copper. This is a typical summer greeting from the Alps to the hiker.
In the coolness of their shade, alpine coniferous forests offer a respite from the summer heat. A chance to breathe and hear the sounds of their gentle branch cracking, swaying in the breeze. If one is lucky, sighting a deer, or a nuthatch.
When I come across the small larch cones on the ground every year, I cannot resist. I select one and place it in my pocket. To remind myself when I am back in the city of those cooler, slower days. To paint another card that captures those memories. Until we can meet again.
