Honourable Mention for “Winter Sunset at Kenrokuen”, On display at the Awagami International Print Exhibition in Tokushima from October 7 to November 11.

This winter in Japan was productive in so many ways. In addition to finding the inspiration for the next compositions in the Eight Views of Kanazawa in Winter series, I ended up painting the images that would become my contribution for the world’s largest show for prints on washi. The AIMPE takes place this October in Tokushima, Japan. I am happy to announce that an “Honourable Mention” was awarded to the print “Winter Sunset at Kenrokuen” , ใ€Œๅ…ผๅ…ญๅœ’ๅ†ฌใฎๆ—ฅๆšฎใ‚Œใ€.

Joining the world’s largest juried show for prints on washi

This is my second participation in the Awagami show. I take part simply for the pleasure of showcasing the multiplied beauty of interaction between classical ink painting and washi. This interaction occurs twice. First, when the original image is created. And then when a new washi is selected and the image as little fine-tuned as possible to achieve the most interesting effect possible in an archival quality digital reproduction. I am not aiming for a printmaking “wow”effect, but simply to highlight the tranquil beauty of classic ink washes for a contemporary audience.

This year I have two new A4 pigment prints on washi on display at the upcoming Awagami International Mini Print Exhibition in Tokushima, Japan. From October 7 to November 11 in the Inbe Art Space, visitors to the world’s largest juried printmaking show for works on washi will be able to see the following prints from me:

  • “Winter Sunset at Kenrokuen” , ใ€Œๅ…ผๅ…ญๅœ’ๅ†ฌใฎๆ—ฅๆšฎใ‚Œใ€
  • “Humans of Asakusa”, ใ€Œๆต…่‰ไบบ้–“ใ€

Reproductions of artwork from this year’s winter in Japan

These works are A4 reproductions of two original ink painting works painted in Japan earlier this year. Both are pigment prints on Premium Kozo washi in an edition of 10 copies made especially for the Awagami exhibition. The prints are numbered, titled, sealed and signed in pencil as seen in the photos here.

During the period of the show both prints are available for purchase exclusively in Japan . All print sales during the show partially contribute to cover the local team’s efforts in Japan. A few days ago I finished all the preparations for print shipments. If you would like to purchase one these prints, send me a message here. I will inform you of their pricing and availability once the show ends.

News from the print exhibition hall

The team at Awagami are working hard to setup the display for the exhibition starting October 7. With nearly 1600 prints, the jury too had an extraordinary task. This week all awards were announced and I had the most wonderful surprise when reading the results.

The print “Winter Sunset at Kenrokuen” , ใ€Œๅ…ผๅ…ญๅœ’ๅ†ฌใฎๆ—ฅๆšฎใ‚Œใ€was selected for an “Honourable Mention”. I am very grateful for this recognition and send my virtual congratulations to the entire team and participants on another successful show in the making.

If you are near Tokushima between October 7 and November 11, please drop by to see all the wonderful prints. If you share images of my prints online, please tag my artist account on instagram @mtenente. I will share tagged images from the show on my stories.
